JRC NRE-63 Marine DSC Watchkeeping Receiver

Product Overview:
The JRC NRE-63 is a dedicated, professional-grade Digital Selective Calling (DSC) watchkeeping receiver designed primarily for commercial vessels, fishing boats, and workboats. Its core function is to provide continuous, reliable monitoring of VHF Channel 70 for DSC distress, urgency, safety, and routine calls, serving as a vital standalone safety device or as a complementary unit to a ship’s main VHF/DSC installation.

Key Features & Specifications:

  1. Primary Purpose: Continuous DSC Watchkeeping. It acts as an “always-on” sentinel, ensuring no DSC distress alert or call is missed, even if the main ship’s radio is tuned to a working channel or switched off in port.

  2. DSC Compliance: Fully complies with international standards:

    • IMO SOLAS GMDSS requirements for vessels not required to carry a VHF radiotelephone (as a standalone unit).

    • ITU-R M.493 & M.541.

    • IEC 61097-9 (Class A DSC functionality).

  3. Display & Interface:

    • Large, High-Contrast LCD Screen: Clearly shows all DSC message information.

    • Intuitive Keypad: Simple menu-driven operation for programming and review.

    • Audible & Visual Alarms: Loud, distinctive alarms for Distress, Urgency/Safety, and Routine calls. The screen flashes to alert the watchkeeper.

  4. Core DSC Functions:

    • Reception of All DSC Calls: Distress, Distress Acknowledgment, Distress Relay, All Ships, Individual, and Group calls.

    • Automatic Acknowledgement: Can be set to automatically acknowledge routine DSC calls.

    • Distress Call Storage: Automatically stores received distress coordinates and details for immediate review.

    • Position Interface: Can connect to an external GPS/GNSS receiver (NMEA 0183) to update its internal position and UTC time, which is critical for accurate distress location reception.

  5. MMSI Management:

    • Can store multiple MMSI numbers:

      • Own Ship MMSI: For individual and group call addressing.

      • Group MMSI: For fleet operations.

      • Coast Station ID: For automated receipt of shore-based bulletins.

  6. Alerting & Integration:

    • Remote Alarm Output: Provides a dry contact closure to connect to a central alarm panel or bridge alert system, ensuring alerts are heard throughout the vessel.

    • Scanning Function: Can scan multiple DSC “hotspots” for fleet operations.

  7. Construction & Reliability:

    • Robust Marine Design: Built to withstand the harsh marine environment (resistant to salt spray, vibration).

    • Compact & Low Power: Designed for minimal space and power consumption, allowing for 24/7 operation.

Typical Applications:

  • Primary DSC Watchkeeper on non-SOLAS commercial vessels (fishing boats, tugboats, barges, small cargo vessels).

  • Secondary/Backup DSC Monitor on SOLAS-class vessels, providing redundancy to the main GMDSS console.

  • Crew Cabin or Remote Station Alert Receiver to ensure off-watch crew are alerted to any DSC distress.

  • Fleet Operations Base Station for monitoring group calls from a fleet of vessels.
